Short-Track Schedule Changes Short-Change Spectators
March 1, 2007 at 8:27 am (Talk of the Town)
Okay, so I bit the bullet and purchased two passes for the first week of the Canada Winter Games. Both my partner and I wanted to see the speed skating short-track relay race and maybe catch another event or two. As soon as we arrived in town after our house-sitting stint on Tuesday, we checked the on-line schedules to find that we could see some of the races on Wednesday evening at 7:30pm. We got there at 7:00pm only to discover that it was all over. Apparently they started early, finished early, and didn’t bother to let anyone know through their website. I was soooo disappointed. I’m hoping that today’s events will start on time. Since I can’t rely on the Games’ website for scheduling changes (except for hockey), I’ll have to try to get through by telephone and speak to a live person.

That may not do you any good either. I know someone who bought a pass up at the Centre and it turns out there was nothing going on even though they told him there was where he bought the tickets. The event that was supposed to be at 5:00 or so wasn’t happening and the next one was at 8pm. Well, he was there with his kids and that was too late for them. So he went back to ask for their money back. They said no way. He and the kids didn’t get to see a thing! He is mighty ticked and not going to bother again. What a bummer! Hope you have better luck next time.

Give us a call at the Yukon News. Sounds like a story that could appear in the paper.

Though I’m flattered that the Yukon News are interested in putting my story in print, I sent the following e-mail back:
Good Day,
Thanks for your interest in my March 01, 2007 post to my blog Short-Track Schedule Changes Short-Change Spectators. I’m sorry to inform you that I am not interested in the publishing of a story regarding this issue. Though I’m very disappointed about these changes and the lack of coordination between what we’re told at the information kiosk after entering the CWG Centre and what is actually going on inside, I feel it is unfair to come down on volunteer organizers. Also, I’m not sure if these are a couple of isolated incidents or a widespread problem.
If you want a good, positive story to publish, feel free to stroll down to Atco Place and the smaller tent across from it set up for the Gathering of Northern Nations. The entertainment and artists’ displays were, for me, the real highlights thus far.
Thanks again,
Carole
